Who does Pepsi hire for graphic design?

As I was checking out my google reader i come across this tropicana blurb on Notcot.com and it was like they read my mind. via:notcot.com
The controversial Tropicana redesign is rolling back to its previous design after an onslaught of negative feedback. A tipster tells us that Pentagram principal, Paula Scher, states in her Facebook status update: “Paula Scher thinks that the Tropicana recall will be the worst thing that happened to graphic design since focus testing.” Unfortunately, we would have to agree. (This is an update to an earlier post)

Pepsi Logo - a response

Pepsi Logo - A Response: digital

So they recently plastered the Powell BART station in San Francisco with Pepsi ads. Just big posters that say "POP", "HOPE", "SODA", "JOY", etc. All flaunting Pepsi's new lopsided logo.

And every time I see the logo, I can't help imagining a big belly button in the middle... So I thought I would share my vision with you all. You'll never look at the Pepsi logo the same again =)

Skateboard brand Element has joined forced with TOMS Shoes for a limited edition collection of shoes and skateboards. Following TOMS Shoes' "One for One" model, with every skateboard purchased, Element is giving one TOMS + Element skateboard to a child living in Durban, South Africa. The skateboards feature the TOMS logo in the center, with light blue stripes along the sides.

In addition, TOMS and Element created a limited edition collection of shoes, with five basic models: Owl, Element Print, Black Pink Stitch, Striped Flower, and Black with Gray Stitch. The Striped Flower (pictured second from top) is probably my favorite design, with its undulating, dandelion-like pattern and the contrasting, retro peach, turquoise and yellow stripes along the front. The next design pictured is the Black Pink Stitch, which features Element's punk rock-influenced, black-and-white pattern, along with a black toe and fluorescent pink stitching and accents throughout.

TOMS + Element Striped Flower and Black Pink Stitch shoes, $46 each; TOMS + Element Collab Cruiser skateboard, $150. Visit TOMSShoes.com

Cool portable camera phonographs EBAY finds of the week

Portable Phonograph Rare *NR*

Item Description

  • beautiful phonograph by unknown brand
  • good overall condition with inevitable scratches due to its age
  • arm in good shape moving smoothly
  • sounds good
  • measures 7" x 6 1/2" x 3 1/2"
  • may need some adjustment upon receipt

This is a Mikiphone Pocket Phonograph for playing 78 RPM 10" or
smaller records, anywhere you might want to, as it is mechanical
and portable. It was Swiss made by Paillard, circa 1925. It has a serial
number of 26-0023471. It is one of the smallest phonographs ever made
and it has great Swiss watchmaker craftmanship. This MikiPhone is
complete and does work fine. It has a cloth and leather case which it fits
into and it looks like an oversize pocketwatch. The zipper works fine,
and handle seems strong. There is some useage marks showing and
some soiling from age or storage. It all folds into this case which
measures 5" across x 2" wide. It includes the original and rare tin needle
case which is pretty full of needles. The dark green needle tin has some
scratches on it and has some dents in it. Inside the lid of the phono
is the diagram for packing it up. The partly hollow arm swings out
and you attach the reproducer pickup or needle part, which is
the original, and is well marked, and it has an excellent
diaphram in it. The nickel back of the reproducer has a little
scuff wear on the back where the black celluloid resonator
attaches which emits the sound. The celluloid resonator
has some scuff marks from use and attaching it to pickup.
This is mostly made of nickel plated steel and weights about
3 pounds. It winds up like a clock with the big key on the side,
and when you move the arm it turns it on, and you also can
adjust the 78rpm speed also. The nickel on the outer body has
some scratches and a small ding on the front and back
from some use and handling, but the nickel plate is pretty
good on the front side. It also has some discoloring on the
nickel from the case which you store it in, or maybe
from handling it, and some small corrosion spots, this is mainly
on the outer rim part. The case is
lined with a dark purple felt and it may have reacted on the nickel,
by dulling it in some places. The picture of the side shows
the dullness on the rim or sides of the metal casing. It might
polish out some, but I do not expect it will come out very shiny
on the rim. The turntable has a red felt top which has some
wear spots in it. A very nice and unusual item from the 1920's.
Insurance if wanted, will be based on final price.

Do you collect Antique Crank Record Players? Ever see a portable one

this small? Imagine its Summer, the year 1920. You head off on a picnic

with your family or your sweetheart. Out comes the blanket and food and

Oh! The music. You pull out your KOMPACT box camera size portable phonograph.

Open it up, take out the crank and wind it. Flip open the turntable extensions and

place on your 78 RPM Bing Crosby Record. Swing over the reproducer arm with

needle and place it on the record. Whala! You have music. Quite amazing.

This very clean Antique portable phonograph is in good working condition.

I played a record on it a few times. Also I was curious? I unscrewed four screws

and looked inside to find the winding mechanics are of Swiss manufacture by

The Famous music box company "Thorens" See photos..... Closed, The portable

crank phonograph measures 8" long by 5-1/4" wide by 6" high.

It has the original crank. The leather carrying strap on the top is missing.

From others that I've seen, one can be cut from an old leather belt. Record

not included (they're easy to get) No reserve. ........BE SURE TO CHECK ALL THE PHOTOS!........

For those of you who enjoy a cup of joe with your morning paper, the RITI Coffee printer offers an ingenious way to green your morning ritual: by turning your old coffee grounds into a sustainable source of ink for your printer! One of fifty top entries in this year’s Greener Gadgets Competition, the RITI printer takes the leftover grounds from your morning roast and plugs them into an ink cartridge to create an eco-friendly source of ink. Who would have ever guessed coffee stains could be be so useful!

RITI Printer, Green Gadgets, Ink Cartridges, Printing with Coffee, greener gadgets, sustainable design, green design, green electronics, waste reduction

Hosted by Core77 and Inhabitat, this year’s Greener Gadgets Design Competition resulted in an incredible crop of innovative consumer electronics designs, and we’re excited to offer you the first scoop on some of our favorite designs! Jeon Hwan Ju’s RITI printer works by replacing environmentally un-friendly inkjet cartridges with the dregs from your daily coffee. Simply place used grounds in the ink case, insert a piece of paper, and move the ink case left and right to print text.

RITI Printer, Green Gadgets, Ink Cartridges, Printing with Coffee, greener gadgets, sustainable design, green design, green electronics, waste reduction

In addition to ridding the printing process of the ink cartridge (its most environmentally un-friendly throw-out), the RITI printer also requires a bit of human action to get things going, which eliminates the need for any really significant power source. This last part of the idea seems a bit impractical, but after all that coffee you are drinking, maybe you need some exercise to burn off your excess energy!? Not a coffee drinker? No worries, it works just as well with tea.

The Greener Gadgets Design Competition has JUST announced the 50 finalists on a public voting website that seeks reader participation. We’re going to use your votes to help determine the top ten designs to take to the Greener Gadgets Conference, to compete live on stage for $5000 in prize money. Check it out and weigh in today! Whats your favorite Greener Gadget?

Obama's Secret Record Collection

Obama's Secret Record Collection

Inside the White House Record Library

DAVID BROWNE

When Barack Obama moved into the White House on January 20th, he gained access to five chefs, a private bowling alley — and a killer collection of classic LPs. Stored in the basement of the executive mansion is the official White House Record Library: several hundred LPs that include landmark albums in rock (Led Zeppelin IV, the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed), punk (the Ramones' Rocket to Russia, the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols), cult classics (Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica, the Flying Burrito Brothers' The Gilded Palace of Sin) and disco. Not to mention records by Santana, Neil Young, Talking Heads, Isaac Hayes, Elton John, the Cars and Barry Manilow.

During the waning days of the Nixon administration, the RIAA, the record companies' trade group, decided the library should include sound recordings as well as books. In 1973, the organization donated close to 2,000 LPs. The bad news: The selection was dominated by the likes of Pat Boone, the Carpenters and John Denver. In 1979, legendary producer John Hammond convened a new commission to update the list for the hipper Carter administration. "They felt they needed to redress some of the oversights that might have taken place the first time around," says Boston music critic and author Bob Blumenthal, who was put in charge of adding 200 rock records to the library.

At the commission's first meeting, Blumenthal brought up Randy Newman's thorny dissection of Southern culture, Good Old Boys, to determine what restrictions the panel might face. "That was exhibit A," Blumenthal says. "And I was told, 'Oh, the president loves that album! Go ahead!' " So Blumenthal and his advisers — including Paul Nelson, then Rolling Stone's reviews editor — compiled a list to reflect "diversity in what was going on in popular music." They picked the Kinks' Arthur for its "theme of empire," and Blumenthal snuck in favorites like David Bowie's Hunky Dory.

On January 13th, 1981, the LPs — each in a sleeve with a presidential seal — were presented to Jimmy Carter at a White House ceremony. But the collection — placed in a hallway near the third-floor listening room, complete with a sound system — didn't remain upstairs long. When Ronald Reagan took office that year, the LPs were moved to the basement. Depending on the source, the reason was Nancy Reagan's distaste for shelves of vinyl, or the edgy choices themselves. A spokesman for Obama said it was too early to comment on whether the president would revive the library. But Obama may be pleased to learn that at least a few of his favorite albums — Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks, Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run — are there if he wants them on pristine slabs of vinyl.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss Sweep Five Categories at Grammy Awards

Winning in all five of the categories they were nominated in, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss reigned supreme at the 51st annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland and Brad Paisley were also other multiple winners during the Sunday night (Feb. 8) ceremony at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Plant and Krauss found their charm with their first collaborative effort, Raising Sand, which was named best contemporary folk/Americana album and overall album of the year. Nominees in the latter category included Coldplay, Lil Wayne, Ne-Yo and Radiohead. Plant and Krauss‘ wins stemmed from individual tracks from the album -- best country collaboration with vocals (“Killing the Blues”), best pop collaboration with vocals (“Rich Woman”) and overall record of the year (“Please Read the Letter”).

In accepting the album of the year award, Krauss thanked a series of people involved with the album, including the musicians who joined them in the studio and on tour, before adding, “Especially Robert. There’s never a dull moment.”

Plant is well-aware of the status and reputation he achieved during the ‘60s and ’70s as Led Zeppelin‘s frontman.

“I’m bewildered,” he said in accepting the album of the year trophy. “In the old days, we would have called it selling out, but I think it‘s a good way to spend the Sunday. I’d like to thank Alison Krass for her kindness and patience, teaching me to sing in straight lines instead of doing all that twirly stuff. And T Bone Burnett, the conjuror, who as a producer has taken us to some great places.”

Burnett closed the acknowledgments by saying, “Thank you to Robert and Alison, I have to say, for coming to the studio with nothing on their minds except courage and love and freedom.”
